An underrepresented part of queer community is that of those with hearing loss, deafness and the hard of hearing. In this film the narrative at first is very much the POV of the main character Mi who is a CODA (mum and Aunty are deaf). But as the story unfolds, Mi, who happens to be a signing language teacher, with the added complexity that she has a deaf girlfriend who doesn’t sign, and with her own hearing deteriorating rapidly. All the Silence’s uniqueness takes into account the variance and nuance of different types of communication abilities and the experience of loss of hearing for a queer character. Director Diego del Rio also gives us a window on the challenges deaf community faced during the Pandemic era.
