Arguably Al Pacino’s hottest role, his depiction of undercover cop Steve Burns getting his leather on to catch a serial killer stalking gay men in New York’s S&M scene would also prove to be one of his most controversial. Loosely adapted in by The Exorcist writer/director William Freidkin from the Gerald Walker novel of the same name, it was the target of protest by the queer community before it debuted in 1980, with many fearing it would demonise them and kink-positivity. Also coolly received by critics, it has been re-evaluated in recent years as the much more nuanced and boundary-pushing provocation that it is. Come for the true crime kicks, giallo vibes and Pacino rocking the sleekly alluring Tom of Finland style. Stay for the whip-smart social commentary, pushing back against prejudice and police brutality with an open mind.

“ALL AT ONCE PRESCIENT AND UTTERLY EQUIVOCAL ABOUT ITS CENTRAL CHARACTER AND SUBJECT MATTER … THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT SHOULD BE EXPECTED OF A GIALLO-ESQUE NOIR … IN QUEERING THE CONVENTIONS OF THOSE GENRES, FRIEDKIN ALSO REVITALISES THEM." - ANTON BITEL, LITTLE WHITE LIES
