Prolific activist-filmmaker and controversy-magnet Rosa von Praunheim’s epochal docudrama concerns a closeted young provincial man introduced to a series of manifestations of gay subculture in early 70’s Berlin. Yet, being piercingly critical of assimilationist gays who ape bourgeois heteronormativity, it not only incurred the predictable wrath of some straight viewers, but was found inflammatory by conservative gay audiences too…
