From A24, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino.
This hotly anticipated queer feature from Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name) is an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ unfinished 1985 novella. Starring Daniel Craig (James Bond) playing Lee – a thinly disguised autobiographical stand-in for the famed Beat author.
Lee idles away his days and nights in 1950s Mexico City, gadding about with the expat crowd, hopping from gay bar to gay bar and indulging in anything going, licit or otherwise. He soon sets his sights on the handsome but aloof Eugene (rising star, Drew Starkey) to embark on a quest to explore the mythic telepathic properties of ayahuasca deep in the depths of the Amazon.
Featuring transformative supporting roles by Jason Schwartzman and Lesley Manville, the film from A24 is receiving raves for Daniel Craig’s performance who is no stranger to queer film and characters – having had key roles in that other film about Truman Capote, Infamous (which opened the 2007 MQFF), playing private investigator Benoit Blanc, in Knives Out and Glass Onion, and the Francis Bacon biopic, Love is the Devil.
